VOCATIONAL EDUCATION
Vocational Education is a study which prepares a person for not only jobs but also in the field of business as well as choose a profession for his life and livelihood .
It was traditionally non - academic in the earlier time . But gradually its nature became somewhat changed and mixed with general education which is called vocationalisation of education which meant in the students of secondary and higher secondary level acquire training in some vocation .
In the Vedic period, parents used to impart education about their offsprings. In some fields , general education also imparted with vocational education i.e. Brahmins were taught social, religious and medical education . Similarly, Kshatriyas taught Vedas , Mathematics, Logic and Military training .
In the Buddhist period, there was also curriculum which include medical education , handicraft, architecture, painting, sculpture etc.
Handicraft and Medical Education had an important place in Muslim Education system also .
In this context , we can't forget about M.K.Gandhi's Wardha Scheme of Basic Education (1937) . He framed the scheme to provide education through some form of craft or productive work, that a child should study from the tyranny of purely academic and theoretical books and to break down the barriers between manual and intellectual work .
Rabindranath Tagore also envisaged that Nature is the best teacher. He rejected book-centered education for students. He gave importance on Fine arts, games, music, drama , painting etc. In his words,"Speaking is for Mankind and Music is for Nature ." Tagore was aware about the rural poverty of our country. That's why he tried to eradicate it through vocational educational training that students would become skilled artisans in a particular field according to own choice and can remove the poverty by earning applying their education. In this context, we can mention about the system of Bishwa Varati University i.e Shantiniketan .
Different Comissions from Pre-Independence period to present time gave important suggestions for the improvement of vocational education, though its progress is not as fast . The reasons behind that are shortage of finance, lack of teachers training etc.
The introduction of New Education Policy 2020 , tried to focus from learning based to skill based. It created a National Committee for the integration of Vocational Education (NCIVE) is seen as a reformative move .
According to New Education Policy 2022, Vocational Education will start in school from 6th grade which also includes internships.
In the conclusion , we can say that the importance of vocational education is not only for skill development and education for livelihood , but also , solving the problem of Unemployment and development of activeness and alertness as a whole . It is the only way through which the problem of Unemployment can eradicate easily from society that can bring a skill based society for our next generation .
