DETERIORATION OF WORLD PEACE
The world peace is deteriorating day by day. Global Peace Index 2025 report shows that the average level of country peacefulness deteriorated by 0.36%. India ranked 115 in this Global Peace Index. The main factors affecting world peace are political and economic factors. United Nations Department of Global Communications illustrated that 'together, we can take action to build a more inclusive, sustainable, and peaceful world for all.'
The term 'world' refers to the earth and its inhabitants, both plants and animals. 'Peace' is a state of harmony where no hostility, no violence, no conflict. Peace is a freedom from fear of war and death. Albert Einstein stated, "Peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice, of law, of order - in short, of government." The 'world peace' refers to an ideal state of happiness, harmony and freedom within and among all people and nations on Earth. Deterioration of world peace means a decline of global harmony and freedom politically, socially and economically.
The world has been witnessing the deterioration of world peace gradually since the World War I. It has been reaching at extreme worst situation since World War II. Some ongoing international conflicts are the Israel - Palestine war, the Russia - Ukraine war, the India - Pakistan conflict, the conflict in Sudan, the Syrian civil war, and internal conflicts are going on in Bangladesh, in Nepal and in Myanmar etc.
In 2004, a high level panel formed by former United Nations Secretary-general Kaafi Annan identified six clusters that threaten peace and security today:
1. Economic and social threats, including poverty, infectious diseases and environmental degradation.
2. Inter - state conflict.
3. Internal conflict, including civil war, genocide and other large scale atrocities.
4. Nuclear, radiological, chemical and biological weapons.
5. Terrorism and
6. Transitional organized crime.
The major damages occur due to war and conflicts are - loss of human life and animals affect physical and mental health too, destroy many natural and man-made resources, widespread environmental pollution, economic collapse, displacement of people and disruption of socio- cultural life of people etc. Human being, animal and environment suffer a lot due to internal or international war.
It's time to think how to stop conflicts and war and maintain world peace. We may follow the following suggestive measures to bring peace in this world:
1. Since, 1945 the United Nations have aimed to resolve conflicts without war. UNO was established to " save successive generations from the trauma of war which twice in our life time has brought untold sorrow to mankind"- Preamble to UN charter.
2. People can follow different religious concepts and ideas for their spiritual development. Actually the teaching and philosophy of all religions desire to keep peace mentality, socially and to keep harmony, to respect each other, to forgive and not to harm any creature of God and spread happiness everywhere.
3. Many secular organisations also have aimed to bring peace in the world through addressing human rights, technology, education etc. are used as an end to all forms of fighting.
4. The government of every nation should keep in mind the interest of the people of the country. Corruption should be eliminated, price rise should be eliminated, give freedom of speech and expression, provide education and give employment. When the people of the country live in peace, they will surely keep peace.
5. The government should follow the pillars of peace like the promotion of human rights and justice, promotion of development and promotion of international peace and security. Individually we should be free from hostility, free from neglect others religious beliefs, jealousy, conflict and violence.
6. Inter-state relations must be improved by following the principle of harmony, respect, tolerance, socio-cultural understanding, import-export and following law and order. These may stop fighting and bring peace in the world.
The United Nations established 'World Peace Day' which is also known as 'The International Day of Peace' in 1981 to promote peace and non-violence worldwide. The day is observed annually on 21st September. The theme of the day for 2025 is 'Act Now for a Peaceful World' which highlights the urgent need for collective action to prevent conflicts, combat hate and misinformation and supports peace builders.
The political, economic and social factors are mostly responsible for deterioration of world peace. The observation of a particular day is not enough to maintain peace and control deterioration of peace. The government and every country of the world particularly boundary sharing country should act for a peaceful world. It's the responsibility of every citizen of the country to live with harmony, to respect each other and to show empathy, follow law and order. Then one day the world will be a happy, just, and peaceful world.
